Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of incorporating someone else's work as if it were your own and not give due credit to the original author. Simply put, it is stealing another person's work or idea. Academic institutions are strict when it comes to plagiarism issues. Sanctions and punishments are placed on those who are found to have committed plagiarism. Professionals can also not escape being sanctioned because if they are found to be guilty of committing plagiarism, they can be stripped of their licenses and not allowed to practice their profession. Plagiarism takes on different forms and can include copying and pasting, word switching, copying another author's style, use of metaphor, and making another's idea as your own.

Students choose to copy and paste other people's work on their own work because they find it easier than having to paraphrase and learning how to cite properly. They think that they can get away with it because no one would know what they have done. After all, professors do not have access to every book in the world nor do they know every word of every book published. Still, students should realize that plagiarism is not as simple as it looks.

Because of the grave sanctions most academic institutions place on those who are found to have committed plagiarism, it is better to learn how to cite properly. Numerous handbooks are available and the Internet can also be consulted with regards to citation styles. However, not everything should be cited. There are things like common knowledge that are known by the general public and should not be cited. There are also those works that were only read and not specifically used in the paper. As such, they do not need to be referenced.

It is essential to remember to avoid plagiarism at all times. No matter how good your paper might be, if your professor finds any plagiarism in it, you will most likely be in trouble. Avoiding being plagiarized is easy. Students only need to remember that every work or idea that they borrowed from another source should be properly cited. If they are unsure, they should consult their instructors who can determine if they need to reference their sources or not. Having a properly referenced academic paper will show that you placed a great deal of effort in writing and researching your assignment.
